    Your First Prompt

    5 min read

It’s time to stop talking about AI and start talking *to* AI. A 'prompt' is simply the text you type into the chat box.

If you type something simple like 'Tell me a joke', the AI will respond. But if you type something specific like 'Tell me a joke about a cat who thinks he is a ninja', you get a much more interesting result.

The Anatomy of a Basic Prompt:

    1. The Command: 'Write', 'Explain', 'List', 'Summarize'.

    2. The Subject: What are you talking about?

    3. The Detail: Any extra info to help the AI.

    Try this experiment:

Go to a free AI tool (like ChatGPT) and type:

'I am learning about AI. Write a 3-sentence welcome message to me that is encouraging and uses a space exploration theme.'

    Why this works:

    * You gave it a Role (welcoming someone).

    * You gave it a Constraint (3 sentences).

    * You gave it a Tone/Style (encouraging, space theme).

When the AI responds, notice how it followed every instruction. This is the foundation of prompting: the more clearly you define the 'box' for the AI to play in, the better the result will be.

    Note-Taking Prompt

"What was the result of your first experiment? How did adding the 'space exploration theme' change the message? What happens if you remove the '3-sentence' constraint?"

    Key Takeaways

A prompt is the instruction you give the AI.
Specific prompts lead to specific and interesting results.
Simple constraints (like sentence count or theme) help control the AI.
